Berri

Riverland, South Australia
Production, Packaging, Warehouse and Distribution Centre

Accolade’s Berri Estates winery is the largest grape processor in the Southern Hemisphere, crushing around 220,000 tonnes of grapes annually – that’s approximately one third of South Australia’s entire crush.

The facility exports over 100 million litres of wine around the world annually and over six and a half million litres of that wine is delivered to the UK every month. Berri Estates employs 265 permanent staff and up to 415 individuals over the busy harvest period.

Accolade Park

Bristol, United Kingdom
European Packaging, Warehouse and Distribution Centre

Accolade Park is a multi-award winning bottling facility, and the largest wine warehouse and distribution centre in Europe, which employs over 500 people and produces 25 million cases* of wine each year.

Accolade Park is a state of the art manufacturing plant, as well as the only dedicated wine bottling facility in the UK. With 6 packaging lines and the capability of producing 1,200 bottles of wine every minute, Accolade Park can also package every format, from glass to cask.

Investing in Innovation

In each of the last three years, Accolade Wines has invested over $20 million on improvements in the winemaking, packaging and distribution operations in Australia and the United Kingdom.

As well as enhancing the quality of the wines we produce, these projects have helped to run the business more efficiently, while significantly reducing the impact on the environment.

Highlights of the investment in our Australian operations:

  • Cross flow filtration installed at all sites in Australia at a cost of over $7 million. This investment delivered a significant improvement in yield and premium wine volume, while eliminating the use of filtration materials and the associated environmental impact of disposal.
  • Power savings of up to 50% have been achieved by installing Variable Speed Drives to manage the power needs of pumps and refrigeration systems.
  • Investment of almost $1,000,000 in tank insulation upgrades every year ensuring the highest quality winemaking conditions for all of our wines.
  • Approximately $3,000,000 has been invested in redevelopment of the historic Tintara winery cellar door. This investment transforms the site from a basic cellar door offering to a visitor destination in the heart of the McLaren Vale.
  • The purchase and installation of a $2,800,000 grape juice evaporator at our Berri site has opened up new opportunities for the business. An additional $1,200,000 has been outlaid on complementary technology.
  • The Berri packaging operation is equipped with the latest technology to improve flexibility and quality, allowing around the clock production of over 300,000 litres per day.
  • Berri maintains British Retail Consortium Global Standards accreditation.

Highlights of the investment in Accolade Park, United Kingdom:

  • Invested £8.5 million in new technology to increase production capacity on the bottling lines up to 1200 bottles per minute.
  • New temperature control technology means premium wines can be warehoused on site.
  • Almost £150,000 has been spent on palletisation to enhance flexibility of post-production stock management.
  • In acquiring a small bottle production capability, 187 and 250ml bottles can now be filled within Accolade Park. This £250,000 investment demonstrates our commitment to our customers as they seek new products to meet consumer demand.
  • Accolade Park is making the switch to low energy industrial lighting technologies at a cost of £250,000.
  • By adopting zero-waste practices, Accolade Park is on track to divert all site waste from landfill.
