The 2009 Leasingham Classic Clare Riesling was awarded the Clare Valley Riesling Trophy at the 32nd International Wine Challenge (IWC), overnight. The wine impressed the esteemed judging panel and was deemed the best regional expression of all Clare Valley Rieslings entered.

The win heralds a positive start to the international wine show circuit for Leasingham and builds on the stellar results achieved in 2014. The 2009 Leasingham Classic Clare Riesling was awarded International Trophy for Best in Show at the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards Asia as well as an IWC Gold Medal.

Matt Caldersmith, Leasingham Winemaker, is thrilled with the win as it highlights the quality of regionally distinct Australian wines and the efforts of those who make them.

“We are overjoyed to win the Clare Valley Riesling Trophy, especially in such a high quality field. We strive to make exemplary Clare Valley wines and to be recognised by the IWC judging panel in this way is very rewarding.

The full IWC results for Leasingham provide well deserved recognition for all the talented and dedicated people involved and represent a continued acknowledgement of the outstanding fruit resource we have in the Clare Valley,” said Matt.

Charles Metcalfe, co-chairman of the IWC commented: “Australian wine continues to go from strength to strength, as its native winemakers demonstrate their star quality. We discovered some delicious examples of more classic grapes like Semillon and Riesling, and even some top quality sweet and fortified wines. Overall, it has been a vintage year for Australia at the IWC.”
