Kumala, the number one South African wine brand, is proud to be the official wine sponsor of Sir Ian Botham’s eight day charity walk across South Africa, dubbed ‘Beefy Walking the Rainbow Nation.’
The mammoth walk will take in much of South Africa’s stunning scenery, kicking off on Thursday 10th December at Llandudno beach, Western Cape, and finishing in Pretoria on 17th December.
This walk will mark the celebration of Beefy’s 60th Birthday and the 30th anniversary of his first ever walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End in 1985, where he raised over £1m to aid research for Leukaemia and Lymphoma.
Beefy Walking the Rainbow Nation will raise money for a number of key South African charities; Nazareth House, The Chipembere Rhino Foundation, the Kliptown Youth Program and The Waitrose Foundation Southern Africa.
“Kumala is delighted to be partnering with Beefy on his walk of the Rainbow Nation. The tireless work that Sir Ian continues to do through his Foundation, has raised over £13 million (R279 million) to date. This is an astonishing achievement and one that we are proud to be sponsoring with our Kumala brand,” says Paul Schaafsma, Global Chief Executive Officer of Accolade Wines, Kumala’s parent company.
“The third day of the walk will be especially poignant for our Accolade Wines colleagues in Stellenbosch, because the journey begins at the Kayamandi Primary School. This school has two brand new classrooms which Kumala has helped to fund as part of Accolade Wines’ 10 year education support program to the township,” concluded Schaafsma.
Throughout the walk, Kumala will be holding wine tastings for the walkers, sponsors and spectators. Wine will be available for purchase and the locals are sure to be entertained along the way.
A virtual wine tasting event will be run alongside the walk on the 9th of December across the Kumala Facebook page using #KumalaWines.
In the UK, Kumala joined forces with the Daily Mail, and ran a competition for two to fly to South Africa and walk alongside Sir Ian in his walk across the Rainbow Nation. The winners – a couple from East Grinstead – are delighted at the opportunity to attend and meet their cricket hero.
Kumala Launched in 1995, Kumala wines is the number one selling South African wine brand in the world* with over 30 million bottles of wine sold in the UK, Europe, Canada, Asia and the USA each year.
Kumala’s story is not one of overnight success – it was launched in 1995 – 20 years ago. Sourced from some of the best vineyards in the Western Cape from Paarl and Stellenbosch through to Worcester and as far as the Olifants River, each vintage of Kumala is unique as the wines are all given the time to mature and develop at their own speed.
In keeping with the brand’s ethos of taking time to allow for perfection, Ben Jordaan, Kumala’s winemaker notes: “It is all about the time needed for the grapes to develop the perfect flavours from which we create our range of vibrant wines. We believe that while it is important to make wines that add joy to life, those wines should also be produced in a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable manner.”
Whether you prefer wine that is dry and fruity, mellow and full-bodied or light and crisp, you are guaranteed to find a wine within the Kumala range that suits your particular tastes and palate.
